It is advisable to not only go through the points but also share the information. This information is for general awareness about Blood and Blood Donation and to make best use of this opportunity for social awareness.

Facts:

·         Anyone who is in good health, is at least 18 years old and weight at least 50 kgs may donate blood every 6 months.

·         Blood donation takes only few steps: medical history, quick physical donation and snacks.

·         Blood donation isn't painful... at least it doesn't hurt as much as piercing the ears.

·         A normal adult has five to six litres of blood in his/her body of which only 350 ml is taken out during blood donation.

·         Giving blood will neither decrease your strength nor will your health suffer. In fact, the bone marrow is stimulated to produce new cells.

·         After donating blood, you replace red blood cells within 3 to 4 weeks. It takes eight weeks to restore the iron lost during donating. In terms of volume the loss is corrected only in 24 - 48 hours by the body.

·         Fourteen tests, 11 of which are for infectious diseases, are performed on each unit of donated blood.

·         Donating blood on a regular basis reduces the iron stores in the body and study supports the theory that reducing iron appears to preserve heart and vascular health.

·         People with O- type blood group are universal donors. Their blood can be given to people of all blood groups.

·         People with AB+ type blood group are universal donors of plasma, the liquid portion of blood. AB+ plasma is often used in emergencies, for newborns and for patients requiring massive transfusions.
